HAMPTON, S.C. (Feb 11, 2012) – For many professionals, a new pair of dress pants does not lead to increased safety on the job. However, new “work clothes” for firefighters in Hampton County mean protection in dangerous situations. The new gear will be purchased thanks to a $2,500 donation through America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM. Grow Communities gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. Jimmie McMillan was the winning farmer in Hampton County. He recognized the value firefighters add to his community and directed the donation to the Hampton County Fire and Rescue.The organization will use the $2500 to purchase new uniform apparel for the more than 160 firefighters who serve Hampton County.“We are so thankful for this donation,” said Gene Rushing, fire chief. “Our firefighters serve our community so bravely. Every call they go out on is time away from their families. It will be wonderful to give them something in return.”During a surprise retirement dinner for Chief Gene Rushing, McMillan got the chance to present the $2,500 donation to the Hampton County Fire Department.Through America’s Farmers Grow Communities, farmers in more than 1,200 eligible counties have the chance to win $2,500 for their favorite community nonprofits. Monsanto Fund has invested more than $3.1 million to rural communities this year alone.In South Carolina, $35,000 will go to nonprofit organizations in 14 eligible counties.
